Eighteen -year-old Pointe Claire resident Kat Garcia is living her dreams on stage and the little screen. An accomplished singer, Garcia who is best known for her acting role on Télé-Québec’s Tactik as Chastity Gomez-Baker, released her fifth single entitled ‘Can we go back’ in early October. The song has spruced up a music video which is available on Youtube.
When her parents found her playing the piano by ear at age four, Garcia’s musical career was just getting started. After many performances at school, her singing talents led her to release a four-song EP in 2009.
Since then, her music has played all over North and South America in Icing Accessories, Ardene Accessories, Wet Seal Clothing, Le Garage Clothing, Dynamite Clothing, Stitches Clothing stores and Canadian radio stations. One of her singles, ‘Inolvidable’ recently began playing in restaurants such as Abuelo’s and El Torrito’s in the U.S.
Garcia climbed up the ladder pretty quickly in the music industry. After being noticed in a nightclub gig at Circus Nightclub, her first professional performance, she sang as recognized Universal Republic artist Karl Wolf’s opening act in downtown Montreal in April 2010.
“It was pretty crazy because I was 16 at the time and I ended up headlining the event at Circus Nightclub. One of the DJs that who was working that night proposed me to open for Karl Wolf and I accepted of course,” she said.
She followed up by becoming the opening act for the internationally known boy band ‘Wow The Group’ at Club Soda for the PopSmash tour sponsored by Popstar Magazine and Virgin Radio. She opened for Danny Fernandes at the Palais des Congrès as well as Young Money artists in early July 2011.
Unsure of what direction to take for her next opus, Garcia is nonetheless working on a new EP. She is exploring various styles of music to find out what she truly wants to do. She notably plans on going back to her latin roots and experimenting with more upbeat pop/house sounds.
“I think that’s the way to go now: creating singles and not just one album because I have so many different styles of music that I would like to explore. So before creating an album, I’d like to maybe explore different styles and sounds so that my audience can kind of guide me and help me find what I truly want to do,” she said.
A John Abbott honours commerce student, Garcia also dreams of finding a way to create a business that would combine her love of singing, acting and entrepreneurship. She already got a head-start in the business world when she released her fashion line ‘Posh Avenue’ in collaboration with her sister earlier this fall.
