West Island volunteers turn out for Haiti

In response to the violent earthquake that recently wrecked such havoc upon the island of Haiti, Radio 94.7 Hits FM and the Otis Grant & Friends Foundation organized a radiothon on January 29th, broadcasting live for 12 consecutive hours, from the TASK parking lot on the Trans Canada Highway service road in Pointe Claire.

Volunteers, braving below-freezing temperatures made worse by the wind chill factor, willingly lent a hand collecting emergency provisions to be sent to Haiti as part of a disaster relief effort. “It was just so cold!” said Shari Fraser, Volunteer Coordinator of Volunteer West Island.

Volunteer West Island, the only volunteer recruitment organization in the West Island, filled 30 volunteer places! Among the hardy people on hand to accept donations of new clothing, non-perishable food items, and bottled water, was a dedicated team of staff members from Volunteer West Island itself.

West Island residents brought their donations to the parking lot of TASK Micro Electronics where volunteers sorted and packed them for distribution in Haiti by the Salvation Army of Canada. Beaconsfield High School students organized a “Hat Day”, raising over $1,700 that they donated, along with clothing items, to the relief effort. The supplies collected from generous West Islanders completely filled a gigantic semi-trailer. “None of this would have been possible without the help of our volunteers!” stated Marty Lamarre, Promotions Director of 94.7 Hits FM.
