Straight Talk

Harper in no position to talk about gun control

Published on December 20, 2012

Back to the no-gun registry days of the Wild West

Stephen Harper did not have much to say the other day about the massacre in Connecticut.

That's understandable. Harper is in no position to talk about gun control.

No other Prime Minister has done more to abolish the control of firearms in Canada. His idea of gun control is longer jail time. As if that's going to stop somebody like Marc Lépine or Adam Lanza.

Harper's masterpiece move - spending millions to destroy a gun registry in place for decades that police fought to keep. It was one of the best police gun registries in the world.

Little is known even today about how much Harper and his Reform faction worked behind the scenes to abolish gun control and promote the spread of firearms in the past six years.

Harper's famous Advisory Committee on firearms is still at work for firearms, made up of shooting club stalwarts who are always telling Harper what to do about guns.

It does not end there. The other day, without even passing a law, or discussing it in Parliament, Harper and his ministers issued a cabinet decree that from December 14 on all hardware stores and other stores that sell weapons will no longer have to keep a registry of the names and addresses of customers who bought guns from them.

It was the last vestige of a system of firearms control that goes back decades.

So no more gun registry in the hands of police, and now no registry in gunstores either. Back to the days of the Wild West.

Harper's in no position to talk about gun control. That's understandable.
