Best pickup/trash-talk line heard at the Als' Official Grey Cup Party? Would you try this approach to Rider women on the eve of the game? "Would you like your spanking tonite or tomorrow?"
Best response heard at the Als' Party? "If I take the spanking tonite does that prevent the spanking at Grey Cup?"
Why would a Regina resident drive 8 hours to Calgary only to give the Alouettes a Game Day morning inspiration? Cuz he's Phil Price, Tony Proudfoot's teammate in the secondary in the 70's. He came from Providence, the one in Rhode Island (to quote the Eagles Last Resort). And as the Als left their hotel this morning Price showed them his '74 Grey Cup ring and told them to go get their own!
Biggest scare Marv Levy ever gave Tony's teammate "The Phillydog"? One day as players wrapped up a team meeting Marv bellowed "Everybody go but Phil Price."
Dread that he was cut or traded, Price was relieved when the future NFL Hall of Fame Coach suggested the two of them go back out on the football field alone. Levy, a hard-throwing lefty, began firing balls to Price's right and left, getting the DB from Idaho State to shuffle and dive and break. "He was wild, and I kept wondering 'why is he throwing so hard? Why is he doing this for me?' Marv wanted me to be better. Finally Johnny Rodgers offered to relieve him. Only I had to ask Johnny to throw harder. He couldn't throw as hard as Marv!"
Have you had your sweet potato today? "Win the Day" and steam the rice, if you want to imitate Anthony Calvillo's Grey Cup party menu.
Our hotel still had watermelon at the buffet so it won't all be on the heads of Rider fans tonite.
Alouette most under the radar who could be a huge difference-maker? Ramon Guzman. He could be a force for the Als and is expected to see more playing time than Shea Emry. Guz is an inspiration--a true survivor. And as Avon Cobourne talked on the eve of the game about how he almost quit 2 seasons ago, Guzman admits it took about 2 years for GM Jim Popp to talk him into coming up to Canada. Football was his salvation from the 'hood, and drug problems plague his family and childhood friends, if you can call that a childhood. But former Alouette/Concorde Turner Gill recruited him to the University of Buffalo and after several years with the NFL's Colts, Guzman could soon have his breakout game.
Why do some CFL teams want to reduce the Canadian quotient? One league source suggests its the easy way out for teams that don't want to invest in scouting and developing talent. Hey, if someone can take the easy route and make more money doing it, it is a worry for the CFLPA.
