Only four years have passed since friends Kathleen Houlihan, Michele Morningstar and Elena Trigiani were struck with the brilliant idea of a community-based Terry Fox run.
And with $25,000 in donations accumulated ever since, the run is now a mainstay in Kirkland.
"We were surprised when we saw those figures; just a testament how great the West Island community is," said Trigiani.
"Without the town of Kirkland we would have to rent everything. They're just fantastic. The community is so generous. There's so much participation."
The 2 to 10 km run, set for Sept 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., has taken on more significance in recent years for Trigiani. The former Terry Fox Foundation employee will have her grandmother in attendance after she missed last year's run due to breast cancer - that, after the loss of Trigiani's great-grandmother to the disease the preceding year.
Fellow organizers Houlihan and Morningstar have also lost loved ones to Cancer - as recently as 2010.
"It's hit so many people's families. Even in the past few years, it's hard to find someone where they say 'no, I don't know anyone who has it,'" said Trigiani.
Among them is Eddy Nolan, a 33-year veteran of Terry Fox runs. The runner was diagnosed in Jan. 2011 with stage four cancer in his tonsils and neck, but is now in remission. Even though he'll run in the Montreal Terry Fox Run on the same day, Nolan commended Trigiani and her co-organizers for their contributions towards the growth of the annual event.
"From what I've seen, the girls are doing tremendous work. The Kirkland run seems to be growing which is a good sign. They have a hell of a good team, getting good support and turnouts," said the Ile Bizard resident.
Heritage Park will also be the site of all-day music, a barbecue, and a raffle for great prizes such as Via Rail passes and autographed sticks signed by current members of the Montreal Canadiens.
