Beaconsfield, Kirkland, and Pointe Claire residents among 5000 Hydro customers without power this morning

Hydro Quebec repair crews were dispatched to several West Island cities this morning after heavy winds of up to 80 km/h blew through the entire Island of Montreal last night, causing power outages.

Over 600 homes in Beaconsfield, Kirkland, Dorval, Dollard des Ormeaux, Baie D’Urfe, and Pointe Claire remain without power after dozens of trees, felled by the heavy gusts of wind, landed on overhead power lines, according to Hydro Quebec spokesperson Ouali Fodil.

Anne Kettenbeil  of Prince Edward Avenue was one of 35 Pointe Claire residents without power as of late Tuesday evening.  Several large branches from a tree on her property snapped and landed onto the adjacent power line; residents on the avenue thereafter lost power.

According to Kettenbeil, a live wire hanging above her driveway caused a safety hazard, one in which required immediate assistance from Hydro Quebec.

“They were just passing the buck to the police,” said the Pointe Claire resident, noting the police secured the area two hours later. “It took them a long time to resolve the issue.”

As of Wednesday morning, Hydro was on site working to remedy the solution. The company, said Fodil, has a protocol to follow in the event of a reported live wire.

First, residents must call police to notify a potential safety hazard. Once the local authorities are on site and the safety hazard is confirmed, police oblige Hydro officials to immediately cut power in the targeted area.

Hydro couldn’t confirm whether the wire was, in fact, live.

For Kettenbeil, however, the power outage on Prince Edward Avenue was avoidable. The resident claimed the tree that felled the power line was marked, by Hydro, for removal last year.

“They came, marked the tree, and never came back,” she said.

Fodil couldn’t comment further.
