Ovide Baciu was the mayor of the defunct town of Roxboro from 1990 to 2002.

Pierrefonds-Roxboro will rename the Roxboro Chalet in honour of the late Ovide Baciu, borough officials announced Aug. 16 during the Roxboro Day festivities.

Baciu was the last mayor of the defunct town of Roxboro before it merged with Dollard des Ormeaux in 2002.

“On behalf of the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough council, I wish that the memory of Ovide Baciu, the last mayor of the City of Roxboro, will perpetuate,” borough mayor Jim Beis said in a statement. “It’s a testimony of gratitude to a generous and committed mayor who has devoted many years to his community and to the well-being of citizens.”

Battling cancer, Baciu passed away on Aug. 5 at the Lakeshore General Hospital. He was 65.

“He was authentic and close to the heart of the people of Roxboro,” said Beis.

The borough must wait at least a year between the date of a death and the nomination of a building in a person’s honour, according to toponymy guidelines.
