Outdoor dining at its best in the west

Drumroll please! Last week, our seven-member terrasse testing team set out on a West Island road trip, searching for the best place to grab a drink or meal outside this summer.

Topics :
Hudson Village Theatre , Sources Boulevard , Dorval , West Island

With the five nominees possessing their own unique characteristics, there were plenty of factors to consider in choosing the best spot. Judges scored the terrasses in five different categories, each worth 10 points. Ambiance, quality of service, comfort, the view, and the overall experience all came into the mix.

In fifth place was Jack Astor’s Bar and Grill in Galeries des Sources in Dorval. Although the smaller outdoor-dining space was located right next to the shopping centre’s giant parking lot, Jack Astor’s terrasse had a number of redeeming qualities: comfy couches and an outdoor television are great for relaxing after a day of work or catching the game with a friend or two. The seating on the patio is very comfortable, and the ambiance is great, largely thanks to the friendly staff.

La Porte Grecque Restaurant on Sources Boulevard in Dollard des Ormeaux placed fourth thanks to its relaxing atmosphere. The judges gave this bring-your-own-wine spot points for the way the owners have worked to minimize the terrasse’s proximity to busy Sources Boulevard. The historic building’s architecture and trees surrounding the terrasse make it a great spot to have a family dinner or romantic meal.

In third was Annies Resto-Bar in Ste. Anne de Bellevue. All the judges agreed that Annies’ location cannot be beat: a waterfront terrace with a perfect view of the Ste. Anne boardwalk and canal. What more can you ask for in the West Island? The comfortable and easy-going attitude also make Annies’ terrasse a great place to spend a few hours on a lazy summers’ day.

Although Clints Grill in the new section of Plaza Pointe Claire is located near a train station and highway, the judges were impressed with the landscaping surrounding the terrasse that minimized noise as much as it could. This second place patio was also roomy and clean. The terrasse at Clints Grill is the perfect spot for a business lunch, or to grab a meal with some friends before a night of fun.

In a close-fought race, Ristorante Fornello on Sources Boulevard in Dollard des Ormeaux came out as Best of the West’s terrasse champion.

The cedar hedges and other plants surrounding Fornello’s terrasse make it a little oasis in the middle of a high-traffic area. The patio is spacious, with plenty of room between tables. The music is nice, and the volume is just right, making it easy to hold a conversation. The lighting and overall welcoming ambiance don’t hurt either. “You could barely tell it was on a busy boulevard,” said reporter Raffy Boudjikanian, adding the landscaping, lighting, and music really impressed him.

With summer in full swing, make sure to head out there and check out some of the best terrasses in the west.

Also, make sure to keep your eye on The Chronicle’s pages in the coming weeks for the Best of the West features, and a chance to win some great prizes. This week’s winner is Christiane Leblanc, who earned a pair of Hudson Village Theatre tickets for her Best of the West pizza nomination.

There is a new kid in town-- right next door to third place Annie's in Ste Anne de Bellevue, Johnny's Tapas Bar & Grill can't be beat. The view is fantastic, the service is great and the food.... your taste buds explode with every bite you take. Johnny (the owner) was a longtime bartender at Cheers Pte Claire and then Bourbon Street Pointe Claire. The next logical step for him to do was to open up a place that was his. Brad the chef (and owner) has outdone himself. Every single item on the menu is made in-house-- you will not find anything cooked from frozen or not made from scratch at Johnny's. We'd love to have your team come in for a tasting.... we promise you'll LOVE it! Sam 514-674-1450
