With school about to finish up and summer just around the corner, West Island children will be spending a lot more time outdoors. Helping keep an eye on them as they have for the last quarter century is Sun Youth’s Bike Patrol team.
Sun Youth patrollers will be making the rounds in the neighbourhood weekdays until Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Riding mountain bikes supplied by Dorel Industries, one of the local businesses who is assisting with the program, the patrollers will be working in collaboration with Montreal police including stations 1, 3 and 4. In total, the team consists of 28 patrollers aged 17 to 27 all of whom are student volunteers from a variety of different backgrounds.
Included on this year’s team of patrollers are five teenagers who make up the “Teens on Patrol” part of the unit. After being sworn in, the teenagers will be working side by side with experienced members who will lead the way. Returning for his second year is supervisor Troy Graggs.
Graggs, a Dorval resident, came to be affiliated with Sun Youth through his desire to enroll in the police technology program. “It’s a great summer job and a good experience to have.”
Overall, Graggs said it is a “great way to interact with the public.”
All patrollers are required to undergo a series of training sessions including scenario training as preparation. First and foremost, patrol members must go through a bike training program. More importantly, patrol members must also be certified in administering CPR and first aid. Furthermore, the West Island team’s training program includes understanding Canadian National Railways signs and safety procedures. Each patrol team will be equipped with walkie-talkies and first aid kits.
Not only will Sun Youth’s presence be seen monitoring local parks, playgrounds and bike paths but as part of their duties the group will be educating West Island youths on the importance of bike safety through practical workshops. Also, when called for, the team will be assisting in community events and special operations with Montreal police.
