The Best of the West competition continued at a steady pace this Friday afternoon as a team of four judges set out to hit the best fish and chips places in the West Island (it doesn't make for good delivery food) to determine the top spot among three finalists who were selected after a reader nomination process.
Though all three put on a good show, only one could walk away the winner.
In third place, at 284 points out of 400, was Kelly's Pub. The well-known pub in the Pointe Claire Village will please those who like their haddock fish in oily and crispy batter. The fries were lauded for their sweetness by The Chronicle and Cités-Nouvelles production manager Patrice Charbonneau.
"Home-made," noted sales rep David Seltzer, and "slightly sweet."
In second place, with 305 out of a possible 400, landed Pêcheur du Marché on Sources Boulevard in Dollard des Ormeaux. "Great tartar sauce," noted Chronicle editor Albert Kramberger, adding the haddock fish was very fresh too.
Poissonnerie du Phare on Lakeshore Road in Dorval took the top spot unanimously among all judges with a total of 357 out of 400 points. "Simply delicious," Charbonneau said. "Not greasy, well cooked," Kramberger added.
Each meal was awarded 100 points by individual judges, with 20 points each for the following subcategories: batter, fish, texture, chips, and seasonings.
Next week, our taste testers take on poutine. It's not too late to send in your nominations for that category or the remaining ones. Call news director Marc Lalonde at (514) 685-4690, ex. 243 or e-mail him at marc.lalonde@transcontinental.ca. You can check how your favourite food fared in the following print editions of The Chronicle: poutine (May 27), sushi ( June 3), sweet treat (June 10), salad (June 17), backyard garden (send in your photo) (June 24), late night eats (July 1), community pool (July 8), steak (July 15), pasta dish (July 25), bagels (Aug. 5), breakfast ( Aug. 12), sandwich (Aug. 19), readers' choice (you pick the topic) (Aug. 26).
