Founded 16 years ago, the Pierrefonds-based organization has been a godsend to the West Island through a series of charitable works.
“What we aim to do is be a local resource in terms of social and community services,” explained founder and president Kim Reid.
On Saturday, On Rock will host its first fundraising breakfast, an event “designed to raise money and to create awareness of what we do,” he said.
Among projects the breakfast will help support is The Vault, a volunteer-run drop-in centre On Rock has operated for many years and which offers programs to children and teenagers.
“About three years ago, we also opened a food bank. Currently we provide for over 100 families on a weekly basis,” Reid said, adding that in 2009 they distributed more than $300,000 in food, aided by Moisson Montreal, Second Cup in Fairview, Monster Gym in Pointe Claire and other sources.
On Rock’s most recent initiative is a breakfast/lunch program, now operating in four elementary schools.
“We started three years ago with just lunches, but now we provide the schools with whatever they need. The goal is to get the kids fed.”
On Rock is also looking to expand, and is eyeing the possibility of opening a soup kitchen, offering language training, and other services.
The weekend fundraiser will be held at 9 a.m. at Westview Bible Church, 16789 Pierrefonds Blvd. The cost is $10; the menu includes scrambled eggs, French toast, and other breakfast fare.
Among future plans is their second poker tournament at Bourbon Street West in May, followed by an annual wine-tasting party in June.
