Pierrefonds resident Stewart McCarthey has found himself another job coaching hockey. After being relieved of his duties last season as head coach of the midget espoir Lac St. Louis Tigers, McCarthey has been appointed an assistant coach with the national champion women’s varsity McGill Martlets hockey club.

McCarthey, who compiled a 48-31-11 record with the Tigers, has coached at almost every level in the Lac St. Louis Hockey Association during a career that has spanned 29 years. Before joining the Tigers, he coached at the bantam AA level with the Dollard des Ormeaux Vipers. “Stewart brings a wealth of experience, coaching minor hockey on the West Island,” said Martlets head coach Peter Smith, a Lachine resident who also coaches the Canadian national women’s team. “I was impressed with how he handled a boys espoir midget team in a game against the Martlets last season. His team showed tremendous control and respect and he will no doubt add a new perspective to our coaching staff.”

If you’d like to take in some exciting non-contact yet extremely fast-paced hockey this weekend, the Sportplexe 4 Glaces in Pierrefonds is the place to be. Many of the finest provincial and local Quebec major junior prospects, Canadian and United States university players and several professional pucksters will show their wares as the Cintron Stanley Keg Tournament, which begins Friday and wraps up Sunday afternoon. The talent on display should be enough to make any National Hockey League scout drool. It will feature several NHL players, including Jason Pominville; West Island natives Alex Burrows, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Max Talbot, Bruno Gervais, Martin St. Pierre and Derrick Brassard along with West Island natives Josh Tordjman and Joey Mormina of the American Hockey League.
