Station 1 media relations officer Roberto Del Papa is warning West Islanders to be more careful about leaving their belongings in their personal vehicles after a string of brazen break-ins, frequently into cars parked at personal driveways.
The five recorded incidents occurred between Nov. 15 and 21 in Beaconsfield and Kirkland.
Del Papa said items that were stolen included cash money, laptops, a projector, and cameras. "One even had over $14,000 worth of stuff," in their car, said Del Papa.
While taking the reports in, Del Papa said police noted many of the cars were unlocked. He said taking anything worth monetary value back inside the house, or at least locking them up inside a trunk, is a much better idea than simply leaving it inside the car.
He also reminded that winter tire season is coming up. All vehicles in Quebec must have winter tires by Dec. 15.
A car was broken into in Dorval on Station 5 territory as well last week. Police are on the look-out for a 35-year-old, non-white, black-haired, 5 foot 7 inches tall, 154-pound man, and a second suspect, a non-white, approximately 50-year-old male in connection with the incident.
It occurred Nov. 19 in the afternoon at a Dorval bank parking lot. The suspects reportedly waited for a victim to get into her car before discreetly dropping some $5 bills on the floor.
The younger suspect then reportedly alerted the victim to the bills. As she turned her attention toward the money, the older suspect opened the passenger door to steal her purse.
It is estimated the suspects made off with $1,000, Const. Liliana Belucci said. Sixteen bills of $5 were recovered by police.
