A new elementary school named Enfants-du-Monde just opened its doors in St. Laurent. More than 200 students from all over the world are now calling it home. Located on Marcel Street, right in the middle of a growing neighbourhood, the new school answers multiple needs and its opening is in fact an exceptional event.

New elementary schools are a pretty uncommon feat in the province and it deserves to be mentioned. “It’s the kind of event that doesn’t happen anymore, said Enfants-du-Monde school Principal René Bernier. Nowadays we talk more about school closings than openings.” Mr. Bernier also mentioned that it’s the first school part of the Marguerite-Bourgeoys school board to open in the last seven years.

The 225 students registered at Enfants-du-Monde were born in 33 different countries. This guarantees that the children will learn in a very stimulating and diverse environment. There are still a few desks available as the school can hold 360 students.

A Resurrection

This opening is acutally a reopening as 20 years ago Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague school was closing its doors due to a lack of students. With the expansion of the Bois-Franc and New St. Laurent neighbourhoods, the need for an elementary school was manifested again.

The school now begins a new life and will act as a host for preschool and elementary students. The buildings will also look younger as one million $ was invested by the Ministère de l’Éducation in order to improve the general aspect of it and add a few things. Students will be able to have access to a gym, a lab and a library, amongst other things. (Translated by Pascal LeBlanc)
