Close race makes for tough choice

The results are in! Last week, our six-member team of taste-testers put five of the West Island’s pizzas to trial. After nearly three hours of tasting toppings, sampling sauces, chewing cheese, and crunching crust, a winner emerged – but it was by no means an easy call.

Topics :
West Island , Pointe Claire , Kirkland

Readers’ votes for the West Island’s best pizza kept pouring in until the deadline. The five most nominated pizzerias – those which made our short list – were Restaurant GiGi in Pointe Claire, Restaurant Calzone in Kirkland, Spiros Pizza in Pointe Claire, Nikkos Pizza in Dollard des Ormeaux, and DelMonaco Prêt À Manger in Pierrefonds.

Each taste tester sampled one slice of all dressed pizza (or maybe two) – except for DelMonaco, which was nominated solely for its homemade tomato pizza – and scored each piece in five different 10-point categories. The pizza’s taste, texture, ingredients, sauce, and crust all came into play.

And just as no two pizza’s are the alike, neither were our judges’ opinions. “It was close for me between Calzone and GiGi,” said reporter Raffy Boudjikanian. “Calzone won it for me in the end, because of the cheese.” He gave his winning pie 48 out of 50 total points The Chronicle’s editorial intern Natalie Gill preferred the tomato pizza offered at DelMonaco, giving it 46 on 50. “I just felt it was a real, traditional Italian pizza,” Gill said. “It was fresh. This one stood out, because it wasn’t generic.”

In the end, it was Calzone’s pizza that came in first, with a total of 261 out of a possible 300 points. Comments given by the judges included the words “crisp,” “fragrant,” and “piping hot.”

Close behind was Spiros Pizza, which was awarded 252.5 points out of 300 for its “good overall taste” and “perfect balance.”

In third, with 243 points, was Nikkos Pizza, separated from fourth-place Restaurant GiGi by only one point. “It was really close,” said news director Marc Lalonde of Gigi’s 242-point score.

With 237.5 points, DelMonaco Prêt À Manger finished fifth, but received some very good comments about its tomato-only style: “The crust is super,” one judge said, while another pointed out the “exceptional tomato sauce.”

As for the Best of the West’s big pizza winner, The Chronicle editor Albert Kramberger said Calzone was hard to beat. “It had all the ingredients. It was fresh. The crust was not heavy, and it had a nice crunch to it,” Kramberger said. “And it had just enough cheese.”

Lalonde described the Calzone slice as “the total package.” “Great sauce, great ingredients. The taste stood out,” he said of Calzone’s balance of all the pizza elements. But, then again, with the five top pizza’s finishing so close together, you’ll be satisfied no matter which one you choose. “It was tough to choose a winner,” Lalonde said. “When you’re trying the top five pizza places in the West Island, you can’t really lose.”

Congrats to Calzone, absolutely delicious. We order every Friday night and love it. Sometimes it takes longer than other nights but trust me, its worth the wait. Always fresh toppings, they also make pizza traditional crust or thin, just ask and they make it the way you want. Keep up the good work. Deb

I was so disapointed with the pizza we had delivered from your #1 Calzone, last night. My father reads the N &C's and mentioned a couple of weeks ago about the "best pizza" article. WELL, I was a little doubtful, because Spyros got the #2 spot and I had already tried Spyros, and was very disapointed. The only one on your list that is half decent is Gigi's, and it's just ok. I know taste is a subjective thing, but my Calzone pizza (extra large half/half all dressed/pep and cheese) was dry (almost no sauce), thin, and very few topings. My spouse asked for extra green olives, and on one slice, we counted one piece. I guess it is hard to judge on taste when there is so little sauce and topings. If you want to treat yourselves to a REALLY fantastic pizza, go a little out of your way to Restaurant Dorion, 297 boul. Harwood (it's on the main strip just past Loyola Schmidt, on the same side). Their pizzas are so thick with FRESH topings, that they are more like cakes than pizzas. In some parts of my pep and cheese, I will have almost half an inch of peperoni, and a quarter inch of cheese. And the sauce! Lots of it that just poors out from within. A very messy pizza to eat, which is how it should be. None of this cardboard pizza crap anymore for us.

Sir, regarding the winners of the pizza contest, perhaps the readers would like to know where these establishments can be found. It would be helpful to those who do not live in the area but would care to pay a visit. We are considering a move to Pte, Claire in the near future and have shopped several times at Fairview, but other than that are not too familiar with the West Island. thank you.

I moved here from the east end of Montreal where great pizza places are abundant. I would like to think I know good Pizza. I have been looking for a good pizza place that will deliver to pierrefonds west since I been here.I originally settled on Spanos, which changed to Panos, only to change owners, at which point their Pizza's took a nose dive. I've asked amny friends, and that's when I came across your article. I have now tried 2 of the top spots, GiGi's and Calzone, and I am very surprised by the results. GiGi's was in fact a very good Pizza, comparable to any pizzeria in Montreal. I am not saying it's the best, but it's a serious player that can compete at that level. The only drawback is that they do not deliver North of the 40. I then turned to Calzone, wow they are less than 1KM from my home, so this could be the beginning of a long relationship. Their Pizza is, unfortunately, not even close. The pizza was thin, and surprisingly, unlike the commenst of your reviewer, the cheese was thin and cheap. This Calzone Pizza would be best compared to a 2 for 1 pizza joint that usually throws in a 2L Pepsi, and 12 chicken wings to boot. If you are a serious pizza fan, and want a quality product to feed the family, I would recommend GiGi's for now. Next on my list to try is Nikkos, hopefully they delever to west Pierrefonds. Maybe I caught Calzone on a bad day, or maybe they brought out their "A" game for the reviewers, but if that's the best pizza in the west, there's something very wrong.

I was so pleased to hear that CALZONE'S won for the best pizzeria in the West Island. My family has been ordering from them since we moved back from Toronto 8 yrs ago. The food has always been fresh and generous in toppings! My sister in law who lives in TO, always stops in to take a few pizzas and calzones back with her. Good to see a family run business producing consistant food after all of these years!! GOOD JOB!

I was very disappointed with our pizza delivered from your # 1 pick Calzone. The pizza was dry, with almost no sauce at all. The "nicest" part of all was the 1.5 inch hair that I found baked into the cheese topping. I know that this comment is suppose to be reserved for their pizzas, but I also ordered a Mexican calzone with extra Jalapenos...the jalapenos weren't even cooked into the sauce...but just removed directly from the jar and placed into the calzone. The calzone tasted nicely of the vinegary pickling juice that the jalapenos were originally sitting in. This just goes to show you what type of quality items they serve. Maybe it was bad luck on our part and the main cook wasn't in, or the manager took a day off & there was no supervision... or the main cook was on vacation that day...but it's hard to believe that 2 items ordered on the same day could both taste so unbelieveably bad. We won't be back!

I'll check Calzone out. I've tried almost all the pizzas in the West-Island but never Calzone.
