Also, where can you find a restaurant that size where there are always people there, whether at 10 a.m, on a Sunday or 3 a.m. anytime? Not to mention where all the waitresses were friendly, competent and always appreciative of their customers? This was certainly a place where you were treated with small-restaurant charm in a big-restaurant environment. I was just there for breakfast two Sundays ago and I commented to the smiling waitress: “Gee, you’re in a happy mood!” Yet this was the norm here, not the exception.
This is truly a loss to the community, in many ways, including a severe one to the many night-owls who came here from all over. Whether you were leaving the strip club next door (I have heard there is one, though I have never been to such places, of course), were one of the hundreds of truckers who dropped in for some rest and nourishment weekly, or simply wanted a “nosh” any time of day, Picasso was a trustworthy standard. I know that veteran Montreal entrepreneur Peter Sergakis sold the establishment several years ago, but for the life of me, I can’t imagine business being so bad that they shut down for that reason. Yet that is what owners have said... business was slowing down more and more with every passing week and they had to stop leaking cash.
I remember when Amazona closed on Cote Saint-Luc Rd. a few years ago, the large cadre of regulars who frequented it were stunned. To me, this loss is even more of a shocker. So, I bring this news to you with much regret. The good news is that I only recently discovered La Belle Province, a few thousand feet east on St. Jacques and I think it’s superb, is also very inexpensive and carries bison, one of my favourite meats. The sole issue I have with LBP is the size of the establishment and the large crowds that turn up. Picasso was large enough to feed a hungry army. Hey, La Belle Province , have I got a new location for you!
No, it’s not a humdrum “hamburger” as pronounced by Steve Martin’s Inspector Jacques Clousseau, it’s a new delicacy, invented by a local teen, that is taking the West End by storm! Royal West Academy student Daniel Zimmermann is the genius who came up with a simple, yet crowd-pleasing concept: take two round pieces of bread, add a beef pattie, melt cheese till it’s molten and the bread is crispy, then drown the whole thing with gravy, or dip it in the delectable sauce yourself... and, voila, a scumpdilyicious Zimburger! Sounds a little messy to me, but the owner’s profits from it must be nice and tidy, since students are rushing through the doors of Montreal West eatery Chien Chaud (Westminster Ave. N.) to buy it: $4 for the burger a la carte or $6 for a trio, burger, fries and beverage. I think Daniel deserves a percentage of the take as his cut, don’t you?
