Boutique d’Occasion Thrift Shop for NOVA’s will be marking its relocation to 43 St. Anne St., suite 3 in Ste. Anne de Bellevue on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The original thrift store accumulated so many items that it outgrew itself several times, forcing NOVA to open more stores. “We outgrew our place in St. Anne’s and opened a store in Beaurepaire, we still did not have enough space so we opened another store in Kirkland,” said president of the foundation, Elizabeth Parker. “Then, a space opened up in St. Anne’s that is about 6000 square feet…its where the new store will be.” “The new store will be open six days a week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” said Parker. “It will be closed Mondays.”

The money raised by the thrift stores goes to NOVA health care services provided by volunteers. So far, about $1 million has been donated to NOVA, which doesn’t receive any government funding. “We look after cancer patients and give palliative care. We also have a program, called Carousel, for children who have lost a parent to caner,” said Parker. “The volunteers are wonderful with the care they give.”

Parker opened the first NOVA thrift store when there was a great need for donations. “My mother (who is from England) suggested to open a thrift store,” said Parker. “In England, there is a tradition to open charity stores to raise funds.”

NOVA, which means “a new beginning,” was formerly the VON (Victorian Order of Nurses). The VON was formed in 1897 by Lady Aberdeen, the wife of the Governor General, who wanted to provide a home visiting nurse program.
