Wasn't that interesting timing? I get home from the Als' demolition of the Argos 45-19 to open Friday's mail still sitting on my dresser...and its the order form for Alouette playoff tickets. Count me in for the Als with homefield advantage at the Eastern Final.
So Mats Sundin was telling the truth to CJAD when he insisted he was NOT coming to Montreal...but I wonder if he already knew Montreal was coming to him? I can only feel sorry for Bob Gainey, sitting threw two hours of face-to-face indecision. If the Canadiens' GM could not win a commitment mano-a-mano, I have to believe Sundin won't be playing anywhere close to an NHL rink in 2008.
The only silver lining in Charlie Taafe being fired by the Tiger-Cats? He'll get to see his son in uniform for Fordham University. The former Als' head coach is very proud of his son following in his footsteps as a NCAA college quarterback. Thankfully Charlie will be able to head to a game while still being paid by Hamilton. Expect Taafe to return to US college ranks, but I wouldnt even be surprised to see him in Winnipeg or Toronto next year.
Kickers are often a different breed on the football team, but Austin Anderson of the McGill Redmen insists he's not superstitious. He wears #13, but says it was pretty much the only number left after all the veterans selected their numbers. Lucky 13 hit 5/5 field goals in his McGill debut and is Quebec University Football Special Teams Player of the Week.
Anderson would not be kicking for McGill if not for his grandfather's principled stand against apartheid. Follow me on this one. Austin is the son of Gary Anderson, former All-pro NFL kicker, born in South Africa. Austin's grand-father, an Irish Protestant pastor, left South Africa (Mandela was still jailed at that time) as a protest against the wicked racism that would engulf Southern Africa for years to come. That brought son Gary to the U.S. and from kicking soccer balls to footballs.
On a retirement fishing trip, Gary Anderson (former Steeler and 49er) fell in love with Canmore, Alberta and vowed he would call the Rockies of Canada home. Now Austin has survived the wilds of Alberta and his first McGill Frosh Week, let alone his first Canadian University football game.
I think one of the reasons the Als have kept under-acheiving Alain Kashama around is because he lets them change the ratio at safety...and Chris Smith is out-Boulay-ing Etienne Boulay in the middle of the Als' pass defense. Smith is a hard, clean hitter who's reputation certainly spread quickly among Argos receivers.
