We all live with a certain amount of stress in our lives; we know that some stress is good for us and keeps us alert. What causes distress, however, is when stressful situations become so challenging that they disrupt our sense of well-being, or so common that we lose to the ability to reset between each one.
But there are tools that allow us to rise above these crises. The following are some tips to counteract the crisis cycle:
- We react to crisis by doing something, anything that makes us feel like we are helping to remedy the situation. Instead, select a few personal, professional and business goals that you wish to achieve in the next 6-12 months and follow an action plan to realize these goals.
- Panic-induced activity can lead to exhaustion, burn-out and illness. Rather, understand what inspires you and creates energy within you: use this and the satisfaction of completing your action plan to build an energy reserve.
- We often punish ourselves for actions that do not produce results. As you complete your action plan, you will be able to recognize your achievements and reward yourself. This will lead to increased self-esteem and confidence.
- We are in the habit of reacting to each crisis that arrives. As an alternative, build your action plan to account for roadblocks and challenges. When crisis hits, you will be better prepared to resolve the situation.
- Waiting for the next crisis leads to chronic pessimism. Learn how to increase your optimism by questioning your reactions. Have situations like this always turned out this way? Does this challenging situation apply to your entire life or just this particular element? Is this situation about you or could this have happened to anyone? Asking these questions will lead to a more optimistic way of thinking.
We cannot change the circumstances we live in. But we can change our reaction to them. By learning to rise above the crises around us, we can increase our well-being and improve our daily lives.

Another Crisis???
I think they’re going to call this the decade of crisis. The economic crisis, hurricanes and tsunamis, 9-11 and other terrorist attacks, and now the Swine Flu crisis...we certainly have had our share of emergency situations.
