West Island CALACS mission has many sides

For women who have been victims of sexual assault, finding help and support can be a difficult task. That is where the West Island CALACS (Centres d'aide et de lutte contre les agressions à caractère sexuel) comes in. “Violence against women still exists,” said West Island CALACS worker Catherine Lanza. Last year, the West Island CALACS answered 695 calls from women looking for a follow-up appointment (it should be noted a number of those calls were made by the same people), and did 228 individual follow-ups.

The West Island branch is among about 30 other CALACS across Quebec. The organization offers victims of sexual assault accompaniment for medical and legal appointments, referrals, and both individual and group counselling. “It’s very good to build your network. If you’re isolated, it’s a good way to meet other people and get that support you need from your peers,” Lanza said of the support groups. She pointed out the West Island branch is specific, because they offer English services.

Advocacy, education, and prevention are also part of the West Island CALACS mission. “We also do presentations and workshops in schools,” Lanza said, adding they went to two high schools last year and plan to do more in the future.

The West Island CALACS will hold its annual general assembly tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend or find out more about the organization and how to volunteer can call 514-620-4333.
