Khalid Rizki wins one-song recording deal

The fifth edition of MDJ Idol at A-MA-BAIE youth centre that took place on Aug. 15 gave way to an intense competition between various singers and dancers and gave the kids from the neighbourhood the chance to see some great young local talent in action.

Khalid Rizki, a 17-year-old resident of Pierrefonds was crowned the winner at the end of the night thanks to his performance of “Maintenant ou rien,” a rap song he composed to reflect his desire to win the grand prize after failing to place in the finalists in last year’s competition. He dazzled the crowd with his lyrics and his relaxed attitude on stage and conquered the minds of the judges who thought he was authentic and articulated well.

“I participated last year and I thought I had done good enough to win but I didn’t finish first or second so this year I came in with a lot more preparation. I was a little stressed out at first since I was coming in third on stage but once I got the flow going I had nothing but my objective in mind," he said.

His victory will give him the chance to record a song in a professional studio and record a music video as well.

Competing twice were 14-year-old Anna Wilk and 15-year-old Lusamba Kabeya who first performed a dance performance with the group name Girls Paradise. They fared well but did even better later on in the show when they sang a cover version of "Je prends ma place," a Mixmania television show song. The judges were swayed and awarded them the second prize which entitles them to a recording session in a professional studio.

All in all, the attendance was treated to seven candidate performances plus five performances from established artists. The other candidates were rappers SYM. T, KC Douglas and C-West as well as the three singers from 21 Twest.

The three judges, Sule, Gemini aka Dagemius and Coriolan were there to judge the contestants. They gave comments and feedback to the contestants all night long. They felt great about having seen such talent there that night.

“It's exciting to see the progression of those young artists year after year. I work in a studio and I'm really looking forward to showing Khalid how to work in a studio. said returning judge Sule.

"Tonight was amazing. We again have concrete proof that our youngsters can do something positive and have talent. We must continue to mentor them and give them a platform where they can discover their talent and share it. My hats off to A-MA-BAIE for this initiative," said Coriolan.
