Private development gets lake maintenance paid for by borough

The borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro voted a $144,965.08 restoration of Héritage-sur-le-lac park’s pond for the project’s banks. It is the first time since the pond was been built in 2005 that such costly maintenance will have taken place. Although the project was originally built by the city, the cost will be defrayed by the borough

“We’re not allowed to have normal green grass up to the edge of the lake. So we’re encouraged to have some weeds and bushes and small trees to keep the area from contamination,” said borough Mayor Monique Worth at last Monday’s council meeting.

A borough official said the high cost came about because of safety concerns about the potential presence of blue-green algae in the water.

"There was a big problem in the surroundings last year and the previous years as well. The Environment Ministry has forced municipalities to develop techniques in order to make sure that there won’t be any more contamination going into water, lakes and so on,” said director of public works Claude Lachance.

“It is understood that when we have such a holding tank which is mostly like a lake, we have periodically some works to do. We do some plantation to prevent any contamination.”

Rejection of tenders for improvement work

The borough rejected a list of tenders for improvement work, including the replacement of tennis court fences, the repair of playground areas, the construction of rest areas, paved paths, work out station and related work in various parks and green spaces on its territory during the same meeting. The reason given was that the only submission the met standards exceeded the budget by $250,000,Worth said.

Pavement and related work on multiple streets

La compagnie Meloche inc. was granted a contract in the amount of its tender ($2,390,214.16) including $60,000 for contingencies for the restoration of pavement, drainage, paving, curbs, sidewalks, asphalt-paving and related work on Kingston Street (between Anselme-Lavigne and Aragon), Wilfried, Gilles, Richard (between Barrington and Gilles), St. Denis, De Kenty, De Gaulle streets and Cap St. Jacques Rd. (between Gouin and a private road) and René-Émard Avenue (between Pierrefonds Boulevard  and 4000 René-Émard).
