Legault comes home
Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) leader Francois Legault, a native of Ste. Anne de Bellevue, stopped by his mother's Ste. Elisabeth Street home with candidates in tow during the provincial election campaign. Legault, who had once been finance and education minister as a member of the Parti Quebecois government under Lucien Bouchard and Bernard Landry, gave the press a tour of his childhood home and regaled them with stories of his family's younger days growing up in Ste. Anne's. The upstart CAQ won 19 seats in the Sept. 4 general election.
Two killed in bus collision
Two people died in the aftermath of a collision between a car and a Montreal Transit Corp. bus in Dorval Aug. 14. The collision occurred at the intersection of 55th and Lindsay avenues near the city's western border shortly before 6 p.m. The driver of the bus, a 55-year-old man, was killed when he was thrown out the bus window and crushed by the bus when it rolled onto him, police said. The other victim was a 61-year-old passenger in the car, who was also thrown from the car in the impact. Two others were injured in the accident.
Dollard Sikhs honour shooting victims with vigil
Sikhs at the Gurudwara Sahib Greater Montreal temple in Dollard des Ormeaux honoured victims of a racially-motivated killing in theUnited States with a candlelight vigil Aug. 10. The vigil memorialized the six victims of hate-killer Michael Page, who shot up a Sikh temple in Oak Creek Wisconsin earlier in the month, killing six and injuring four others. One temple member said the vigil allowed the congregation to "stand together," in the wake of the killings.
Held passes away
Lester B. Pearson School Board commissioner Conny Held passed away after a lengthy battle with illness. Held, who replaced the late John Killingbeck as the representative of Pointe Claire West voters on the board's council of commissioners a little less than a year earlier, was a longtime educator whose presence was often felt at community educational events, observers said. Held was 59 at the time of his death
