The festive season is nigh, and on the whole West Islanders are in a celebratory mood.

But for those who are on their own, the pervasive good cheer and revelry at this time of year only underscore their loneliness.

On Dec. 25, Café Herb’s in Ste. Anne de Bellevue will extend an open invitation “to anyone in need or who wants company,” said Carol Ann Dufour, who co-owns the popular waterfront eatery with partner Brian McLeod. “Many people, especially the elderly and those who don’t have families, have nowhere to go Christmas Day. And this is a college town, and there are a lot of students who can’t make it home for Christmas. I’m an immigrant myself and a single mom, and I know what it’s like to spend Christmas alone,” Dufour said.

Throughout the day, Herb’s will be serving a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings free of charge.

In keeping with the spirit of the season, the atmosphere at the diminutive café – known largely for its inspired and original vegetarian fare -- will be convivial, complete with holiday decorations, eggnog, and mince pies. There will also be a live vocal performance and a few surprises.

But their idea has taken on a life of its own. “We’ve been getting donations of money, plum pudding and other treats from the community, and have been soliciting food from our suppliers,” she said, adding further donations would be welcome; any surplus will be donated to a local food bank. “We also have volunteer drivers who will be picking people up at home and dropping them off afterwards. Volunteer West Island has also put up signs for us and may provide volunteers to help out. “I’d like this to become an annual event. I have an eight-year-old daughter who is looking forward to it; I’ve been trying to teach her that Christmas isn’t all about presents.” Dinner will be served from 1 to around 6 p.m. In order to gauge the quantity of food needed, people are requested to make reservations in advance by calling 514-457-1150.
