The Chronicle briefly looked at a few major stores and retailers in the West Island to check up on whether they have signs in English. Here is what we found out.
The Metro at Plaza Pointe-Claire:
Signs at the entrance are in French and English, with smaller English letters for "Entrée," and "Sortie," and the opening hours. All signs inside the store are in French.
Jean Coutu in Centennial Plaza:
Entrance signs are in French, signs for the aisles are in both languages, with smaller English letters. The emergency exit labels at the exit are only in French. They say "push to get out."
Canadian Tire at the Galerie des Sources:
Both aisle and entrance/exit signs are in the two languages, with English being smaller. The store has some sales signs that appear in both French and English.
Super C at the Galerie des Sources:
Super C offers its signs in both languages. However its big sales banners are in French only.
Bureau En Gros at the Galerie des Sources:
The Bureau en Gros has signs in both languages. The store even has some signs that are the same size in English and French, such as the one by the cash register that can do refunds and exchanges.
The Bay at Fairview shopping centre:
Department signs are bilingual, but the smaller signs for aisles are only in French. Sales banners vary.
Sears at Fairview shopping centre:
Department signs are bilingual, but smaller signs for aisles and most of the banners are only in French.
