Quebec Figure Skating Championship set to go in Pierrefonds

The 2012 Summer Quebec Figure Skating Championship is set to go in Pierrefonds. The event which will take place at the Sportplexe 4 Glaces in Pierrefonds will run from August 9 to 12 inclusively.

Approximately one thousand skaters from the national and international scene will participate. The event will be sanctioned by Skate Quebec and Skate Canada. Among the participating athletes will be about forty male and female skaters who are enrolled in the Sports-Étude program and who skate with the Club de Patinage Artistique des Deux Rives.

These skaters, who for the most part are coached by Shawn Winter (dance) and Eric Therrien (pairs-freestyle) will include some of the clubs most promising athletes. Andréanne Poulin and Marc-André Servant are the national 2012 junior dance Gold medalists. Poulin, an École secondaire Des Sources graduate who will attend CEGEP Vanier and Servant have been skating together for four years.

Other dance pairs expected to excel at the summer championship include, among others, Valérie O’Leary (École secondaire des Sources) and Kyle Cayouette (John Rennie High School) who are pre-juvenile 2012 champions as well as the senior dance pair of Mélissande Dumas and David McKay-Perry.

In free style, Peter O’Brien, a John Abbott College student who was second in junior men’s at the 2012 nationals is presently classified in the Sports-Étude program as an International Skater.

Guylaine Carrier-Cyr the vice president of the Deux Rives club and the clubs co-ordinator for the Sport-Étude program says skater’s like O’Brien and pair skaters such as Sarah-Jade Latulippe and Alex Leak are preparing new routines for the August competition.

“This upcoming event is the first of the season for the athletes and they are now working hard to present new programs for the coming year” she said. Carrier-Cyr added that the Sports-Étude program extends to athletes in primary schools to CEGEP.

The championships are open to the public whenever a competition is taking place. Competitions are expected to start around 8:30 a.m. and terminate on most nights around 9:30 p.m. Daily admission is $10 with children five years old and under being admitted for free. A four day $30 pass will be available.
