Badminton Junior Provincial Championships

The kids from BadClub Junior of Vaudreuil-Dorion badminton club had an epic week-end of sporting competition and fun in Saguenay. With them, they brought back 5 gold and 6 silver medals.

From March 28 through 30 at the Séminaire de Chicoutimi, 240 kids from all over Quebec competed together. Among those, Alayna Walia, a Kirkland resident.

Alayna’s mother, Aneesha Walia, said the week-end was “amazing”, praising Badminton Quebec for an outstanding organization. Her daughter, an 11 year old student from Kirkland’s Émile-Nelligan school made it to three finals in the pee-wee category.

“We are training three to four days a week, under the same coach – Réal Labelle - at PCHS”, said the congratulatory mother. She wanted to applaud the coach’s commitment to the kids and the sport. “He is putting a lot of time and effort.”

Participating if different activities

Aneesha Walia said that badminton is being played more and more – especially with kids who don’t necessarily want to play in hockey or soccer.

For Alayna, a “lot of fun” was involved during the Tournament. She likes playing to get the exercise, but also gets encouraged by her coach and parents to play well. Besides exercise, she underlined the fact that she made new friends since she started playing at age 8.

The Walia family loves to play badminton – the parents started to play in native India. They wanted to get the word out there that badminton existed – in the hopes that people will participate.
