The Lakeshore girls softball team won the gold medal in the Cadet Provincial B Tournament that was held in St. Basile le Grand last weekend.

They capped off an incredible season with a grandiose victory against the undefeated St. Eustache Pantheres by a score of 10-0. St. Eustache had not lost a match during the round robin or elimination portion of the tournament and had even defeated Lakeshore twice.

The Lakeshore girls held a 12-2 record during the regular season and were determined to take home the gold in the final as they set the pace early in the game scoring four quick runs in the first inning, ousting previously dominant Pantheres pitcher “Big Legros”.

Then the Lakeshore girls who named themselves the Red Hot Chili Tomatoes shut down the Pantheres’ offence in the bottom first inning thanks to solid pitching from Stasia Tease and that set the tone for the rest of the game.

Tomatoes Assistant Coach Jim Prophet praised the team’s pitching staff when he spoke to Associated Press after the game.

“All year long the girls have been playing outstanding defense and we’ve been getting solid pitching from Stasia and Emily and when we do that we are hard team to beat,” he said.

The rest of the game was dominated by the Tomatoes’ offence which got timely hitting and aggressive base running to cap off the tournament with an epic win. Head Coach Mark Kopalek had nothing but good words for his team when he spoke to the Chronicle on Monday.

“I’m very proud of the girls. It was a great season. They played well whenever they had to and every game when it got more important they played better so it was very exciting to see. The girls really came up big in the final because the team they played had beaten us twice before,” he said.
