It was the Lac Saint Louis AA Yankees baseball association Yankees Day Series Sunday at Parc des Bénévoles in Kirkland. Five regular season games were played back-to-back by the local pee wee, bantam and midget teams. It was also a fundraising event for the association. As a result, over $1,000 was raised.

It was not only a day of fundraising, but also a day to showcase baseball according to coach of the pee wee team Tom Duforest.

“What’s fantastic about today is that it creates awareness about baseball. Baseball is still alive in Montreal so these kinds of events bring that out. You get a lot of people that come in and watch the game. A lot of people that have younger kids that don’t play double letter yet that get some awareness about the level of play in AA,” he said.

For the president of the Lac St. Louis Yankee baseball association, Steve Shelton, these days are important for fundraising because the association needs to beef up the budget.

“Our annual budget is usually raised by registration fees and through fundraising. We need the money to buy equipment, to pay for the umpiring, the scorekeeping, etc. So events like today are very important to try and raise money,” he said.

For the kids, it was just business as usual but the fun was tenfold as there were more people attending. Between 350 and 500 people dropped by during the day according to organizers.

“It was a special day with a good amount of people. It gave us a little boost because you want to do better in front of everyone. We didn’t notice the added cheers much though because we were concentrated on the game,” said 11-year-old Ryan McGregor who plays for the Yankees II pee wee team.
