The midget A Dollard Dragons put the West Island Royals in bases-loaded holes early and often in their 9-5 win June 11 atLakeRoadParkinDollard des Ormeaux. The Dragons started the game on the right foot; by the end of the first inning, they led 3-1. Dollard pitcher Andrew Bernstein fared well in the top of the second, stranding a runner before striking out two to end the inning.
Ryan Katz pushed the Dragons further ahead in the bottom of the second inning. After he was walked by Royals pitcher Will Rebbet, Katz stole second, took third on Ryan Rosenberg’s fly ball and then scored on a passed ball.
Rebbet put himself in a difficult position later in the inning by loading up the bases for Mike Bulua. Shayne Zilversmit then scored on Bulua’s groundout, extending Dollard’s lead to four runs.
Rebbet again loaded up the bases in the next inning, allowing a single and walking two. Katz then hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Andrew Lynn to score. After just three innings, the score was 6-1 for the Dragons.
WestIslandscored in the fourth inning as Dylan Urquhart ran home from third base on a single by Ryan Tobin. Urquhart had stolen second and third bases after having been walked.
Rebbet struggled with his control, walking the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth. With no outs, he was replaced by Zach Pelleher, who limited the damage to one run, leavingWestIslandin a 7-2 hole after four innings.
Dollard head coach Richard Zilversmit told <@Ri>The Chronicle<@$p> his team could have profited from those situations more but that it wasn’t meant to be.
“We could have raised the score even more on those occasions but that’s baseball for you. You never know what’s going to happen,” he said.
The Royals woke up in the fifth inning scoring twice on defensive blunders by the Dragons. However, Pelleher picked up where Rebbet had left off and loaded the bases with three consecutive walks. Mark Galler scored on a wild pitch and Katz later scored on a Kevin Maldonado grounder.
The Royals would add a run in the sixth inning but it would be too little, too late as the Dragons took the honours of the game 9-5.
“The game went not bad. The other team was stronger than us. There was a little wildness early on in pitching but my third guy Zach (Pelleher) pitched well, he was throwing strikes,” saidWestIslandhead coach Mark Stein.
