The 'stache is where it's at; at least for Movember

One time on a 6th grade field trip, I watched a museum curator blow his nose and his boogers got caught in his mustache. That was a defining moment for me. The moment I knew I would never kiss a boy with lip hair.

I've never been much of a mustache buff (are there any women who are? Honestly, I really wanna know this!). I have never once heard any of my girlfriends go, "Oh, he's sooo hot. Blue eyes, great butt, big pushbroom mustache." I am not a mustache-hater so much as a mustache-not understander. I just see that lip hair as a permanent obstacle - a hindrance to many things: making out, eating, nose-blowing (shudder). Most people want to eat their soup, not strain it. And all of that extra grooming...yergh!

When I think of mustaches, I think of guys like this: Hulk Hogan, Geraldo Rivera, Burt Reynolds, Gabe Kaplan, Colonel Sanders, Gene Shalit, John Waters. Ick! I'm definitely open to suggestions, but I can only think of 2 guys who rock the 'stache well: Tom Selleck and Johnny Depp. Otherwise, they're all K-Feds to me.

My boyfriend recently participated in a "mustache contest" with some guys at his office (Me: How do you know who wins the contest? Him: I don't know, we're just growing them. Me: Then how is it a contest if no one wins? Him: I don't know. Me: Is there a prize? Him: No. Me: So, basically you're just growing mustaches then? Him: ...Yeah.) Boys are weird. But I have to say, I kinda got into Scott's mustache cultivation. I mean, Lourdes Ciccone can grow better facial hair than him, but it was fun to see it sprout. Like a science experiment. Like waiting for sea monkeys to hatch. Painfully slow but fascinating. It was fun because I knew it was temporary. At the height of it's magic, he looked like a different person. Like the kind of guy who wears an 8 ball jacket and sells 'ludes on the beach.

Call me a hypocrite and all for dissing the 'stache, but here's something I am definitely all for: have you heard of Movember? Movember is a play on words for the month of November. The idea is, men register to grow a mustache through the month, while at the same time raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer worldwide (women can join too, to raise funds and support their stache-sprouting friends). According to their website, there are over 27 000 "mo-bros" registered in Canada alone (see the links below), and Canadian's have raised over a million bucks for mens' health so far. Outstanding. Plus, from an climatic perspective, it's not a bad idea to be growing a little extra insulation as the weather turns chilly. For anyone who ever wanted to help a cause but didn't want to walk or run 5k...it's gotta be the easiest fundraiser ever. So, i guess in that way - mustaches ain't so bad if they can be used for good and not evil.

So, seeing as how we're only a week and a half deep into Movember - feel free to sign up and let that bad boy grow. Just don't expect any heavy duty make out sessions. Unless, of course, you're Magnum P.I.
