Athletes from the West Island Track recently competed in a Quebec-Ontario interprovincial meet at Montreal’s Claude Robillard Centre. The match up was part of the Corsaire-Chaparal Invitational meet. Ontario edged Quebec for the title by one point (Ont: 105-Que: 104) Derron Downing, a West Island track star who originally hailed from Trinidad, placed second in the 60 meters running event with a time of 7.02 seconds. Downing was edged out for the gold by 3/100’s of a second by Ontario’s Deion Barker. Downing is leading all youth (juvenile) and junior athletes in Quebec over 60 meters. Downing also won gold in the 4x200 metre relay as a member of the Lac St-Louis team.
In the same meet various West Island track club athletes competed in the combined events triathlon. In the “Minime” boys division triathlon (long jump, shot put, 150 sprint) Pierrefonds William Duverger placed sixth out of fourteen competitors. In the Benjamin boys division triathlon (high jump, shot put, 150 m sprint) Jasue Estel, Joshua Vancol, John Churchill, Jayden Laki-Laka and Mathieu Duperron all had excellent results.
