Desforges and Goodman make development squad

The 23-year-old Desforges, known in local circles for having a very aggressive attitude on the hill, will be trying to build on her silver-medal performance at a giant-slalom event last August in Cerra Castor, Argentina.

She finished with a time of 1.44.56. Goodman, 19, who captured silver for Quebec at the 2003 Canada Games and who is just beginning her senior career at the national level finished 17th at the same event.

Wilkinson plays in Gold Cup

Baie d’Urfé native Rhian Wilkinson is penciled in to be part of Team Canada’s roster tonight in Carson, Calif., as the national women’s senior side begins play in the Gold Cup tournament, which wraps up on Sunday.

The stakes for tonight’s match — when The Chronicle went to press Canada was scheduled to play either Panama or Jamaica — will be high.

The winner will gain an automatic berth in next summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in China.

Wilkinson and her teammates will be hoping to build off their recent impressive second-place showing at the Peace Queen Cup in South Korea.

Grapplers invade West Island

Amateur wrestling, a true sport that pits two opponents going head to head on the mat in an attempt to out-duel each other using brute strength and tactical know-how will be the sport of choice this Saturday at Riverdale High School in Pierrefonds as the 26th annual Quebec Open Tournament will unfold.

The event, which will feature approximately 20 Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and New York State clubs, is still open for registration. Divisions will include under-12 peewees, 13-16-year-old bantam-cadets, 17-20-year-old juvenile-juniors, under-17 with no prior experience and a category for women aged 13 to 20. Volleyball finals

Two West Island high-school boys’ division 1 volleyball teams found themselves exactly where they wanted to be recently, at Loyola High School in Notre Dame de Grâce, fighting for city championships.

When the final shot had been fired in both contests, silver was the colour of the day.

The John Rennie bantam side lost two games to one to Loyola High School while the Lindsay Place midget team lost two straight to Loyola. John Rennie’s Jordan Tyrell was named Puma Most Valuable Player in the bantam match.
