The atom B Dollard Dodgers came close last Wednesday but they weren't able to defeat the St. Laurent Athletics in the Lac St. Louis League finals last Wednesday at Brook Park in Pierrefonds. St. Laurent won 23-21 on its last presence at bat with an inside-the-park grand slam by Dan Tzontzis.
"This is the way it goes I guess. You win some you lose some. But the kids played great all season. The most rewarding thing as a coach is to watch the improvement throughout the year. They're all having a great time and that's what it's all about," said Dodgers' head coach Ed Caplan after the game.
The rules of the game in Atom B differ from normal baseball a little bit. Each team takes its turn at bat fielding six hitters and tries to get the most runs. A pitching machine is used to throw the ball and if the hitter strikes out, a tee is brought out giving the hitter an extra chance at hitting the ball.
Back and forth
The score went back and forth for over two hours. Dollard and St. Laurent exchanged the lead on numerous occasions. At the top of the sixth and final inning, St. Laurent was in the lead 19-18. The first batter, Evan Caplan, hit a single on the fourth pitch. After Evan Mintz and Jake Silversmith were forced out at first, Arnold Cole was forced out too but his hit allowed Caplan to cross the plate, tying the score.
Two batters later, Kyle Dubois hit an inside-the-field homerun that gave the Dodgers two runs. At the bottom of the sixth inning, Dollard was in the lead 21-19 and were six outs away from winning the championship.
St. Laurent's first batter, Mariatis Demarkus came ready to play. She hit a hard line drive but Dylan Pkaizen made a spectacular catch in defense. Pkaizen distinguished himself again on the next batter effectively relaying the ball to first base to force him out. The three next hitters for St. Laurent made it to bases and it was all up to the sixth batter, Tzontzis, to win it or lose it for St. Laurent.
Unfortunately for Dollard, he hit the ball hard in the outfield on the first throw, good enough for an inside-the-field grand slam to win the game for the Athletics.
"I'm just shocked. The boys played incredible. Two games in a row we were on the verge of getting knocked out and we came back and won it. I'm just ecstatic for my guys right now," said St. Laurent head coach Robert Goudreau.
