Twelve-year-old Dollard des Ormeaux resident Grace Lin was honoured by the city council on Jan. 15 following her gold-medal performance at the 2012 Skate Canada Challenge held from Dec. 5 to 9 in Regina, Saskatchewan.
The council presented a resolution celebrating her victory at the Jan. 15 council meeting and handed the young lady a plaque commemorating her win.
“I’m very happy I won and I’m very glad the city is honouring me for it,” she said after receiving her plaque.
Lin finished with a total score of 92.21 points in the pre-novice category, 36.15 in the short program and 56.06 in the free program. Michaela du Toit from Toronto was the runner-up with 87.27 points.
Lin’s coach Daniel Beland wasn’t surprised to see Lin take the gold home in December. He has been teaching her since she was six years old and sees great potential in her.
“I expected her to be in the top three for sure. Grace was awesome. She did everything she was supposed to. She had two double-axels; she did a nice triple-Sault. She skated wonderfully in the short program. She skated at her best,” he told The Chronicle last week.
“She’s a good worker. She works really hard. She does everything I ask. She has all the qualities to become a great skater.”
Right now, Lin is training for this year’s competitions and Beland is concocting an all-new program for her.
