The Lakeshore Junior A Jaguars won their second hockey tournament of the 2008-2009 season today when they won the 45th edition of the Atom-Junior tournament in Montreal North 3-1 against the Voyageurs de Cowansville. The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead in the first, only to see Cowansville tie it up near the end of the first. The Jaguars scored 2 more in the second and never looked back after that to go on to win the finals 3-1. The Jaguars who were a perfect 5-0 during the tournament faced stiff competition playing teams from Repentigny, Anjou, Granby and St-Hyacinthe.

The semi final game held Saturday pitted the Jaguars against St-Hyacinthe in a see-saw battle where Lakeshore had the lead twice but saw St-Hyacinthe score with 1:05 left in the third period to bring the game to a 2-2 tie. A 10 minute overtime ensued during which Lakeshore had to kill off a 4 on 3 penalty for 2 minutes late in the overtime, but Lakeshore hung tough and forced the game into shootouts. The game was finally won in shootouts after Lakeshore who elected to shoot first fell behind in the shootouts 1-0. Lakeshore’s Andrew Di Sarro who was the third shooter scored through the 5 hole on the opposition’s goalie to tie the shootouts 1-1, with 1 more St-Hyacinthe shooter to come. Simon Meloche who plays goal for Lakeshore came up huge with 2 big saves on shots 2 and 3 to force a 4th shooter. Lakeshore’s Mathew Wordsworth put it away when he scored the game winner also through the five hole, and Lakeshore’s Meloche made another great save to seal the victory.

Congratulations to all the players and to the coaching staff of Stephen Eyton-Jones, Gary Farrar and Doug Coleman on a excellent tournament performance.
