The Brookwood juvenile AAA Bullets won a close contest against the Sun Youth Hornets Sunday afternoon at Riverdale High School by a score of 85-79.
"I thought the keys to the game where our ability to answer the runs Sun Youth went on. Jalen Rose had a great game providing timely baskets. Daniel Cayer made many defensive plays down the stretch," said Brookwood head coach Joey McKitterick.
The game was hotly contested from the start. Brookwood took an early lead which Sun Youth caught up with. By the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 18.
Jermaine Cabos-Olivier scored a basket 25 seconds into the second quarter to give Sun Youth the lead but Daniel Cayer was fouled thirty seconds later and tied the score with two free throws.
Cayer used a lay-up to give his team the lead seconds later. Then, Cyrus Senior got a basket from afar to put his team ahead by four points. Brookwood seemed in total control at that point.
Cayer distinguished himself again later in the quarter when his pass to a teammate up front lead to another Brookwood score.
However, Sun Youth's Jérôme Brown then got four baskets and one free throw to give the Hornets the lead 30-28. A three-pointer by Cabos-Olivier, three free throws by Brown plus an additional score gave Sun Youth a 38-32 half-time lead.
Turning his back on the play, Sun Youth's Laurent Dupuis scored when he turned around after the half-time break. Lamond Denis got a three-point basket at 1:15 to put his team ahead by nine points. Daniel Mitchell then accepted a long pass to augment the lead.
Brookwood's Kamal Spinsby was then fouled and netted his two free throws before Jaylen Rose scored following a nice hustle to the net. Mitchell got another basket after that before Spinsby and Rose got a basket each and the score was 47-42 with 5:22 left in the third quarter.
Rose then outplayed everyone and scored again to bring the score to 47-44 for Sun Youth. Then, Cayer was fouled and got one point on a free throw before the Bullets tied the score on a fast break.
Cabos-Olivier was then fouled as he scored. He got one additional point on a free throw to put the score at 50-49 for Sun Youth.
Rose zigzagged his way to the net to give Brookwood the lead back at 51-50. Mitchell got a basket seconds later to give the Hornets back the lead 52-51.
Brown then passed to Cabos-Olivier for the basket with 1:15 remaining in the third quarter. Denis then obtained a three-pointer to give his team a six-point lead. Rose reduced that lead with a basket with 35 seconds left. He was fouled on the play and obtained an additional point with a free throw. With a good hustle, Denis put the score at 59-54 with 10 seconds left in the third quarter.
Brookwood came back from behind early in the fourth quarter to take a 62-61 lead early on. Senior got a three-pointer to put the Bullets ahead by four points.
Sun Youth tightened up the score at 65-63 before Senior got a three-pointer to put his team ahead by five. Cabos-Olivier came up with a three-pointer of his own to tighten up the score at 68-66 with 6:20 remaining. Then, Sun Youth obtained a point on a free throw to close the gap.
Brookwood obtained three points in the following seconds as Rose nailed two free throws before Spinsby 22 got one.
Spinsby obtained a basket to get the four-point lead for Brookwood. Brown scored while turning back to reduce the Bullets' lead. But Spinsby got a basket to put the score at 75-71 right after. Rose was fouled then and netted his two free throws for a six-point lead with 2:42 remaining in the game.
Denis was then fouled and netted one free throw. Brookwood's Rose was fouled again with 1:27 remaining and put the score at 79-72.
Cabos-Olivier scored on a rebound with 1:20 remaining but Rose later got one free throw to put the score at 80-74. Sun Youth's Denis got the three-pointer to put the score at 80-77 with 53 seconds left.
Rose again forced a foul and netted one to make the score 81-77. Five seconds later, Rose netted another free throw to make it 82-77. Sun Youth's Cabos-Olivier got a basket with 43 seconds left to put the score at 82-79.
That's as close as Sun Youth would get however. Brookwood's Spinsby, Rose and Cayer were all fouled by the Hornets' defense and netted a free throw each to put the score at 85-79 which would be the final score.
"The guys all worked hard. We just made a few mental errors that made the difference," said Sun Youth's head coach Nathan Grant.
