JRHS win Dodge Cup in Juvenile division 1

John Rennie High School won the provincial Dodge Cup in the Juvenile division 1 on Sunday night in Ile Bizard by defeating École Secondaire Massey-Vanier in the finals by a score of 3-1.

It was a fast-paced game from the get go and both teams wouldn’t give an inch defensively early on. Massey-Vanier scored the first goal when Frederic Quintal beat goalie Evan Fish at 4:25 of the first period. Otherwise, both defensive squads blocked the blue line effectively in the first period and first part of the second period.

Massey-Vanier began to show signs of weakening at mid-second period. Their defence started giving away the blue line more easily as well as more and more odd-man rushes in the face of an increasingly determined John Rennie offense.

“We lacked energy out there. We had played an intense game yesterday that really drained us. As the match progressed, we had less and less energy in our execution and our movements,” said Massey-Vanier head coach Sylvain Danis.

Eric Massie took advantage of a scramble in front of the net to tie the score at 6:16 of the second period. John Rennie got five good scoring chances in the second period but luck kept Massey-Vanier in the game as Jesse Farinaro and Michael Zwonok missed open nets on two-on-one situations. Brett Long also came close to give John Rennie the lead in the dying seconds of the second period as his shot hit the post at the right of goaltender Harley White.

Kevin Maldonado made perhaps the key play of the game early in the third period as he deked the defenseman in front of him before falling to his knees and passing to Rory Gagnon on his backhand, a superb play that stupefied the Massey Vanier defence and goaltender who could not stop Gagnon’s subsequent quick release for the tally at 1:14 of the third.

“I saw them all standing still so I figured I had a good chance of getting by them since they weren’t moving so I went for it. I had Rory going down the wing, I saw him at the end, got lucky, I put it on his stick and he put it away,” said Maldonado after the game.

At this point, it seemed as if Massey-Vanier had run out of steam until Jason Crack obtained a breakaway with less than four minutes remaining in regulation. He went for the five-hole shot but was stopped by Fish. John Rennie’s Alex Montgomery put the game away when he scored on a quick release as he stood inches from the crease on a pass from Massie with 1:58 remaining. The game ended at 3-1 for John Rennie High School.

“These kids since the beginning of the year worked tremendously hard. We won our division, we won our divisional playoffs, we won a provincial tournament in Chicoutimi about a month ago and then we finished off by winning the Dodge Cup. What can a coach say except that I’m really pleased with them,” said John Rennie head coach Gord Armstrong.
