The City of Dorval hopes Quebec will help muffle the roar of the highway.
A noise study request — at Quebec’s cost — was submitted by the city following last week’s council meeting, Mayor Edgar Rouleau said.
Ultimately, Dorval is looking for financial assistance from the province to construct a sound barrier along Highway 20, from Sources Boulevard to the 55th Avenue exit (except near the Dorval Circle).
“There’s more and more traffic and we want to look at what can be done,” Rouleau said. “The residents have asked for one for some years now.”
The mayor said the project would cost millions, but the city is prepared to pay its share.
With assistance from Quebec, neighbouring Pointe Claire and Lachine built sound barriers along Highway 20.
Rouleau lauded the effectiveness of Lachine’s sound wall, built last summer.
“I have to say it does the job . . . it really cuts noise,” he said.
But the mayor wondered whether the shadow of such an imposing structure would be accepted by Dorval residents.
With several types of sound barriers available, he said residents will get an opportunity to voice their thoughts before any project moves ahead.
