So now he's in a hurry?
So now Jean Charest wants to fix the agglomeration council?
Now?
Because the voters whose emotions he so badly trifled with last time around are ready to jump ship to the Action democratique du Quebec (ADQ), thereby potentially robbing the Liberals of their sure-fire, going-to-vote-for-us-because they-always-do West Island anglophone votes.
Majorities for MNAs in safe Liberal ridings shrunk substantially from 2003, because voters who cast their votes in expectations of a legit de-merger decision that year largely went elsewhere in protest last March 26.
Earlier in the year, four Anglo mayors of de-merged cities came forward and publicly supported the ADQ. Does Charest see the
Beaconsfield mayor Bob Benedetti said that, in a meeting with the members of the Union des municipalites du Quebec (UMQ) Charest – along with Municipal Affairs Minister Nathalie Normandeau – 'promised' he would fix the deficit of democracy on the Montreal agglomeration council, which gives suburban municipalities no say in how the majority of their tax revenues are spent.
He also promised that 'You will get your cities back,' on a blustery day at Fairview Pointe Claire in October 2000. Or doesn't he remember?
