Six members of the Dollard des Ormeaux Water-Polo Club were part of a Canadian team that finished 13th at the recently held FINA World Junior Men’s Water-Polo Championship in Long Beach, Ca. Canada defeated Brazil 10-3 in its final game.

It was Canada’s best finish at the prestigious event since 2001.

Lachine’s Andrew Robinson, Dorval’s Jon Ruse, Beaconsfield’s Scott Mumme and Justin Boyd, Kirkland’s Devon Diggle along with Dollard’s Dan Ahmarani all made significant contributions to the Canadian effort.

That, despite the fact Boyd missed the entire playoff round, five games in total, with a perforated eardrum, and centre-

forward Robinson missed two games following a cut that required stitches just under his lower lip.

Diggle finished the tournament with 26 goals, only two behind the scoring leader and tournament Most Valuable Player Denis Varga from Hungary.

Cheetahs

drop Vieux on

the road

The Vanier College Cheetahs moved their 2007 Cegep AAA football record to 2-0 with a 10-3 road win over the Vieux-Montreal Spartiates Saturday night at Universite de Montreal’s CEPSUM stadium.

Wide receiver Duraney White scored the only touchdown of the ballgame on a 12-yard pass from Myles Gibbon with 10:48 left in the fourth quarter.

The Cheetahs also got strong performances from West Islanders Ameet Pall (three sacks) and Samael Lavaud (12 tackles) as they hung on to first place in the league with the win.

Head coach Peter Chryssomalis’ boys will open their home schedule Saturday afternoon at Vanier against F-X Garneau. Game time is 1 p.m.

Track athletes

shine at

prestigious meet

Several of the West Island’s finest track and field athletes made their way to Oromocto, N.B., recently to represent Quebec and compete in the 31st annual Legion National Championship.

When all was said and done, St. Lazare resident Jeremy Thibodeau of the St. Laurent Select Track and Field Club won silver in the long jump with a leap of 6.48-metres and bronze in the 100-metre hurdles with a time of 14.93 while competing in the boys’ under-15 category.

Thibodeau also teamed up with Hacheming Baptiste of the West Island Track Club, Joseph Brunetta and Jason Charbonneau to capture silver for Quebec in the 4X100-metre relay, while Hacheming Baptiste also combined with Brunetta, Charbonneau and Benjamin Raymond to win bronze in the medley relay.

Meanwhile, in the girls’ u-17 category, Ariel Beauregard-Breton of the Pointe Claire-based McGill Olympic Club captured gold in the 3000-metre steeple event with a time of 7:09.42. Her time was about 4.5 seconds short of the Legion record set by West Island native Lise Ogrodnick.￿
