BEAC looking for new members

With a mandate that includes everything from reducing garbage and increasing recycling to exploring alternative energy sources and education campaigns, the Beaconsfield Environmental Advisory Committee (BEAC) is looking for a couple of extra hands.

“We have a lot of work to do,” said BEAC head and District 4 councillor Kate Coulter, who was attending the Sustainable Communities Conference in Ottawa last week. “We have a big mandate and we’d like to have more bodies, more help, and more ideas.”

Coulter said she is looking for two Beaconsfield residents to add to the team, which meets on a monthly basis. The applicants do not need to necessarily have any experience in environmental issues.

“Everyone (the current members) has a variety of backgrounds,” Coulter said. “Mostly, I’m looking for people who have time and are interested, enthusiastic, and have creative ideas.”

Some of the upcoming projects BEAC will be working on are the environment fair and Earth Day events, as well as environmental education presentations for local schools. While the official application deadline is today, Coulter said she will still accept submissions until 12 p.m. Friday. The two new BEAC members will be announced during Monday night’s city council meeting.

“I don’t want to waste any time. I want them to be able to attend our March meeting,” Coulter said.

The BEAC application form is available on the City of Beaconsfield’s website, www.beaconsfield.ca) by clicking the BEAC-Environment Committee link under ‘Useful Links.’
