WISH competition nears finale
WISH competition nears finale

A Canadian Idol-style competition for aspiring vocalists has taken the West Island by storm since it was launched in December.

“The response has been fantastic. We couldn’t have imagined it would be such a success,” said Janet Campeau of Blue Sunshine Music, the local entertainment management company which spearheaded the WISH (West Islanders Sing the Hits) competition.

“We’re booked solid every week, with tickets selling out well in advance,” the Pierrefonds resident said.

The showdowns, which are held every Saturday at Cheevzz Resto Pub in Beaconsfield, are nearing the final phase following two weeks of wild card competitions.

“From the semi-finals on March 15 the judges will narrow it down to three contestants, who will perform on gala night on the 22nd.”

Campeau said she has been impressed by the level of talent demonstrated by nearly 40 amateur singers who have taken part to date.

“There’s a cross section of participants, who range in age from 19 to 64. We’ve heard a wide variety of musical styles from all eras.”

The winner of the competition will have the opportunity to record a three-track demo produced by St. Lazare singer/songwriter Robert Stefan, and will be featured as a guest performer at one of his upcoming shows. Stefan has also written the song My Wish for the competition, which finalists will sing on gala night.

Tickets for the finals on March 22 are on sale at Cheevzz (205 Alton Ave.), include dinner and entertainment and are selling briskly, said Campeau, adding they’re hoping to fill the club to its capacity of 1,200.

“Children under the age of 18 are welcome as the gala (starting at 7 p.m.) will be held on the tennis court.”

Tickets are also still available for the 50-50 raffle, with half the proceeds going to the West Island Community Resource Centre. The draw for the grand prize — two front-row seats for the upcoming Canadiens-Senators hockey game — will also be held gala night.
