With over 120 people running through the streets of the West Island last year, organizers of the West Island Crusade Against Cancer (WICAC) annual run hope even more people will show up for this Saturday’s event.
Founded in 1995, WICAC is a volunteer-run organization that holds events all throughout the year to raise funds for organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society and Nova West Island.
According to Steve Allen of the Phoenix Running Club, which is helping organize this year’s event, he hopes people will recognize the community aspect of the run: Nova West Island and the West Island Palliative Care Centre will both receive donations from the funds raised.
“One of the things we’re trying to bring out is the local charities behind this,” he said. “We’re looking at making this (run) into the West Island cancer event.”
This Saturday’s run kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Red Barn, 20609 Lakeshore Rd. in Baie d'Urfé. Registration is between $20 and $30, depending on the chosen run, and can be done in person at the Running Room, 950 St. John’s Blvd. in Pointe Claire or online at
www.runingroom.com.
“But people are very welcome to show up the day of as well,” Allen said.
