Ile Bizard referendum result nullified

Though Ile Bizard/Ste. Geneviève has been a borough of Montreal since the 2002 mergers, a decision by the Quebec Superior Court has nullified the 2004 referendum results.

"The result of the referendum on the demerger of the City of Ile Bizard, where the majority of voices in favour of the demerger was inferior to the 35 per cent of eligible voters as foreseen by law, is nullified," reads a summary on Elections Quebec's website.

In 2004, Ile Bizard residents had been asked to vote in a referendum whether they wanted to stay merged to the City of Montreal or demerge.

Former mayor Normand Marinacci led the legal charge to appeal the referendum's results to the Quebec Superior Court.
