Hockey season is back
Can you feel it, it’s coming, Hockey Season, not yours, not your son or daughters, that started a month ago. It’s the Montreal Canadiens who have finally hit the ice. It seems all too close when Carey Price looked like a 19-year-old boy in round two against the Philadelphia Flyers. After some changes, Les Glorieux are ready for their 100th season as a franchise.
Like many of the posters said all of last year, This City is Hockey, This Island is Hockey, This Province is Hockey, you get my point. General Manager Bob Gainey had a plan five years ago, and hopefully for him and this organization it all comes together early June of 2009.
The Montreal Canadiens as a franchise have won cups during 9 straight decades, that streak will be over if Saku Koivu does not raise the cup next Spring. Even though memories of 1993 will come back to most Habs fans this year with the retirement of Patrick Roy’s Number 33, only Mr. Brisebois remains form then and he left and came back.
This season is make it or break it for the Canadiens, the long list of Unrestricted Free-Agents includes: Saku Koivu, Alex Kovalev, Mike Komisarek, Francis Bouillon, Mathieu Dandenault, Tom Kostopoulos, Steve Begin and newcomers Alex Tanguay and Robert Lang. That’s nine players potentially gone for the 2009-10 season. I know some players are easily replaced; however when you start messing with the Big K’s your messing with the heart of the team.
Koivu, Komisarek and Kovalev will all play an integral role in the Habs success this year. One would think the priority of Gainey would be to lock up the younger of the three, Komisarek, but the longer he waits with Koivu and Kovalev’s future the more the media will bring in the trade rumors come February.
All I really wanted to say is get excited for this season Hab fans, because Gainey has a plan and that plan is to win the Stanley Cup. He will still make moves to improve his team if they get off to a slow start. He will be buyer of talent come spring time. If there was any season to win number 25 it would be this year and Gainey knows that.
Go Thrashers…
