The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) seized a significant quantity of contraband tobacco products as part of a joint investigation involving its Montreal and Hamilton, Ontario Customs and Excise sections. The investigators seized a total of 765 cases of cigarettes that were not properly stamped, each containing 10,000 cigarettes, a little over 3,000 kilograms of fine cut tobacco, a tractor semi-trailer and $1,000 in cash.

This seizure was made during the course of an investigation launched a few weeks ago. Based on intelligence received, the investigators were able to intercept a vehicle on Highway 20 West in the Dorval area last Friday afternoon.

One suspect from Ontario was arrested and could be charged under the Excise Act 2001. He could also face a maximum fine of 1.6 million dollars, and his vehicle could be seized. The investigation is ongoing.

It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police would like to invite the public to report any information on the illicit activities of individuals or groups of individuals to the RCMP Customs and Excise Section at 514-939-8305 or to Info-Crime Québec at 1-800-711-1800.
