Edges end season in style, shutout Panthers 3-0
The Peewee B Pierrefonds/DDO Edges completed a remarkable season with a 3-0 shutout of the Lakeshore Panthers this past Saturday. The win secured the league championship for the girls, who were also victorious at the Pierrefonds Inter-Regional Tournament and the Montreal Cup over the course of the winter.
Building on a 23-1-0 regular season record, the Edges began the playoffs by defeating the Verdun/Lasalle Leafs 2-0 and the DDO/Pierrefonds Blades 4-3 before taking on the Panthers in the final.
After a scoreless first period, the Edges got on the board early in the second when Julia Asplund-Renaud weaved her way through a maze of Lakeshore players and found the back of the net with a hard wrist shot. The goal would stand as the winner, as Jesse Jonassohn shut the door, shutting out her opponents for the 15th time in regional play including the playoffs.
Alexandra Marshall also turned in a strong game, keeping the Panthers on their toes with frequent rushes from her defense position and also contributing an insurance goal in the third period.
Coach Tony D’Aliesio was pleased to see the team succeed on the ice, but was even happier to watch them develop outside the rink.
“Only four of the girls had played together previously, so you could tell they were a bit nervous at the beginning. Though they came in as strangers, they gelled over the year and ended up as great friends.”
Rounding out the Edges’ roster are Chelsea Weitzman, Milena D'Aliesio, Amy Gabbour, Dimitra Paneris, Sabrina Bishop, Alexandra Brassard, Victoria D'Intino, Sofia Pirro and Jenny Richa. They will celebrate with a year-end party this Friday night where coach D’Aliesio will get to dole out the hardware accrued after their successful season.
“The coaches were great, the players were talented and responsive to us and the parents were supportive. What can I say? It couldn’t have gone any better.”
