West Islander gets another international cap
The Canadian under-20 men’s soccer team is scheduled to compete in a two-game series against the Czech Republic beginning today in Prague and Ile Bizard native Jonathan Bourgault has earned a spot on head coach Dale Mitchell’s roster.
This will be the second taste of international competition at the u-20 level for the 18-year-old Bourgault, a former Ile Bizard house-league and inter-city player as well as u-14 –16 and –18 Lac St. Louis AAA Lakers performer. Last spring, he participated in a three-game set in Alberta and British Columbia against powerful Brazil, one that saw the Canadians shock the Brazilians by defeating them 2-1 in the opener May 5 in Edmonton. Bourgault, currently living in Germany where he is playing professionally for St. Pauli FC, hopes to make a solid impression on Mitchell and the rest of Team Canada’s coaching staff in Prague. It would help solidify his spot on a Canadian team scheduled to host next summer’s FIFA u-20 World Cup, a biennial event showcasing the most talented u-20 soccer players in the world. Second only to the FIFA World Cup in size and scope, the tournament will unfold in six cities across the country, including Montreal.

Joining Bourgault in Prague will be Olivier Lacoste-Lebuis, who although not a West Island resident was a teammate of his two years ago on the u-16 Lakers, a talented club that won gold at the Canadian club championships.
