At this time of year, one of the most anticipated events on the local arts scene is Art Expo, an annual showcase that for over a quarter-century has raised several thousands of dollars for causes near and dear to West Islanders’ hearts.
“Since 2004, 15 per cent of sales from both our big spring and our fall exhibitions have gone to the West Island Palliative Care Residence, said Ann Kruzelecky, publicity co-ordinator for the Beaconsfield Artists Association (BAA).
At this weekend’s exposition at Centennial Hall, “the emphasis will be on works in small format, although there will be a range of sizes. It makes it very attractive for people who may be looking for that special Christmas gift, said the Beaconsfield resident, who, like most of the BAA’s 75 active members will display a piece or two of her work.
Featured will be paintings in oil, watercolour, and acrylic, as well as some sculpture and other media. Subject matter will vary from “florals to landscapes to portraiture, said Kruzelecky, who is currently pursuing her BFA at Concordia University.
The raffle of an original artwork is a regular highlight of the event, with all proceeds from ticket sales going directly to the palliative care residence, she added. This year’s donating artist is South Shore resident Evangeline Methot.
“We’ll present a cheque to them at our next meeting.
Centennial Hall has been the association’s home base since it was established in 1984, and it has been the customary venue for both Art Expo and the group’s larger-scale show in early May.
The group, which is comprised of largely local art enthusiasts ranging from semi-professionals to professional level, meets monthly from September through May, and hosts guest speakers, workshops and related activities. New members are welcome.
Art Expo 2006 will be held from Dec. 1 to 3 at 288 Beaconsfield Blvd. The vernissage will be held Friday from 8 to 10 p.m., continuing Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Many of the artists will be on hand throughout the weekend to meet with visitors and discuss their work.
